The Focus Awards Level 4 Award in Investigative Consultation and Advanced Skin Assessment is a regulated qualification designed to develop your knowledge and practical skills in advanced skin assessment and investigative consultation.

You will learn how to gather and interpret relevant information about your client, assess their skin systematically and use your findings to support professional treatment decisions within your scope of practice.

This qualification is designed for beauty therapists, facialists and aesthetic practitioners who want to develop a more structured and confident approach to consultation and skin assessment.

Experienced practitioners are welcome, but this remains a Level 4 qualification.

What is an investigative consultation?

An investigative consultation goes beyond asking the client what treatment they would like or completing a standard consultation form.

It involves exploring the different factors that may affect the appearance, health and behaviour of the skin. This may include the client’s:

• current skin concerns;
• medical history;
• medication;
• lifestyle;
• diet and hydration;
• environmental exposure;
• skincare routine;
• previous treatments;
• treatment expectations;
• contraindications and cautions.

This information is considered alongside a structured visual and tactile assessment of the skin.

The purpose is to build a more complete picture of the client before deciding whether to treat, adapt the proposed treatment, postpone treatment or recommend referral to another professional.

Skin assessment is not medical diagnosis

This is an advanced skin assessment qualification, not a medical dermatology qualification.

It does not qualify beauty or aesthetic practitioners to diagnose medical skin disease.

You will develop your ability to recognise and assess skin characteristics and presenting concerns within your professional scope. You should refer the client to an appropriate healthcare professional whenever a condition is unexplained, outside your competence or requires medical diagnosis or treatment.

Entry requirements

There are no formal qualification entry requirements.

However, this course is most relevant to learners who are already working in beauty, facial or aesthetic practice, or who are progressing towards advanced skin treatments.

Before enrolling, you should consider whether you already have sufficient underpinning anatomy, physiology and skincare knowledge to understand and apply the Level 4 content.

How you will be assessed

This qualification is internally assessed.

You will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence demonstrating that you have met the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the qualification.

Your portfolio will include evidence of your knowledge and understanding, together with evidence that you can conduct an advanced skin analysis and investigative consultation.

You will need access to:

• a computer or suitable device;
• Microsoft Word or an equivalent word-processing programme;
• suitable clients or models where required for your assessment evidence.

Your allocated tutor will provide guidance and support as you work through the qualification and complete your portfolio.

The total course fee is £590.

This includes a £205 booking and registration fee.

Suitable for practitioners who want to progress into regulated training in skin needling procedures.

Level 4 Award in Thermolysis and Cryotherapy for Blemish Removal Treatments

Suitable for practitioners who want to specialise in advanced blemish-removal procedures using thermolysis and cryotherapy.

Already highly qualified or experienced?

This qualification may be useful if you want to strengthen or formalise your consultation and assessment process. However, it may not provide the depth you require if your main goal is advanced dermatology, detailed skin-condition physiology, cosmetic ingredient science or medical diagnosis.

We would rather give you an honest recommendation than enrol you on a qualification that substantially repeats what you already know.

Frequently asked questions

Will this course teach me to diagnose skin conditions?

No. Beauty and aesthetic practitioners should not medically diagnose skin disease unless they hold a separate professional qualification that legally permits them to do so.

The course develops your ability to assess the skin within your professional scope, recognise treatment considerations and identify when referral may be required.

Will this help me choose more appropriate treatments?

The qualification will help you gather and interpret more relevant information before making a treatment decision.

The treatments you can ultimately recommend or perform will still depend on your existing qualifications, competence, insurance and professional scope of practice.

Is this suitable for experienced aesthetic practitioners?

It may be, particularly if you want to formalise or improve your investigative consultation and skin-assessment process.

However, because it is a Level 4 qualification, we recommend contacting us first if you already hold advanced aesthetics or skin qualifications.

Is this an online course?

The delivery arrangements may vary depending on the Jane Bryan Beauty Training centre through which you enrol.

How long will the qualification take?

The qualification has 75 guided learning hours and a total qualification time of 100 hours.

Will I receive tutor support?

Yes. You will be allocated tutor support to guide you through the qualification and the required portfolio evidence.

The exact support arrangements will be explained by your training centre before enrolment.
